Although only one-eighth Cherokee by blood, Scot John Ross's achievements overshadow those of the great war chiefs Red Cloud, Sitting Bull and Geronimo.
He led his tribe in 1838 when it was ethnically cleansed from its traditional lands by the American Government and forced on a 1,000 mile 'Trail of Tears' to Oklahoma. He re-united the tribe after it was torn apart by the American Civil War. Today Ross's Cherokee descendants still revere his memory.
